Christmas trees are sheared annually beginning after the 2nd or 3rd year of growth. Field workers use a long shearing knife to shape branches that have grown too long. This helps create the beautiful pyramidal Christmas tree shape. It also focuses the trees energy to promote budding in the interior branching for a healthy dense look. Some growers remove the bottom 8 to 10 inches of branching to allow more space for cutting the tree during the harvest season and to create a convenient way to place the tree in a stand.
